CLOSE SEASON'S GREETIN'

I see the Sons of Struth managed to get nearly 3000 to turn up to their march yesterday. That's a huge jump considering less than 100 turned up last time. I wonder what was different this time. A free pint? Maybe they'd all been told that they weren't getting their money back from Honest Dave's bank account unless they turned up! Anyway, turn up they did, faces twisted, as is shown in the picture on the BBC website. They looked angry but it's hard to tell if they were or not; they always look like that! As usual they've timed their march to coincide with there being nobody in at Ibrox; probably to avoid the ignominy of being told to piss off!

The Peeppul in general, meanwhile, are still determined to rewrite history. They're banging on about their old team being innocent, of course, but they're also resurrecting the shite about Celtic having it in for them and Peter Lawwell browbeating all the other teams into 'relegating' Sevco. Some of them were claiming on the Daily Record forum that it was the Celtic support that forced the issue, threatening to boycott the ground of any club that didn't vote Sevco out. That's a strange one. Aren't they always telling us that they're the biggest team in Scotland? In that case, surely all the clubs should have been scared to lose the cash cow that was Sevco? Why would they give up all that bounty in order to keep on the good side of the supposed second-biggest club with the second-biggest support?

The truth is that it's a load of utter pish! They know as well as the rest of us that every club in the country was sick to death of how our football authorities bent over backwards constantly to accomodate the Ibrox team. This was the final straw. Once a club is liquidated that's it, the game's a-bogey; the team's dead and if anyone buys the assets then they're starting over with a new team. As usual, however, the rules were to be bent and even broken when it came to Rangers. That's why supporters throughout the country threatened to boycott their own teams; they were outraged that Rangers was to be treated differently, and preferentially, to every other team in the same position.

The Peeppul spit out the phrase, 'Sporting Integrity' as if it was some kind of vituperation. They are, however, trapped by their own arrogance and hubris. They claim constantly that theirs is the biggest team in the country, with the largest support. For all the other clubs and their supporters to turn their back on all the money that Sevco would supposedly bring then it must have involved a huge crisis of conscience. So, even by The Peeppul's own twisted opinions, Sevco was denied admittance to the SPL not for monetary gain or fear but to abide by the rules of the game.

They're also whining and moaning about the money being spent on the Commonwealth Games. 'When's the regeneration of Mount Florida, Kings Park, Hampden and Toryglen happening?' they ask. Obviously they've never been to any of these places. Mount Florida has long been a quite expensive residential area, with lovely, old, red sandstone tenements, which contain huge flats with high ceilings. I would imagine that the owners of these flats would be extremely unhappy, to say the least, to be told that the area was in need of regeneration! Kings Park is also a residential area. There are many detached bungalows, much inhabited by footballers, as well as four-in-a-block flats, which are known as cottage flats in the area. Again, it would come as an unwelcome surprise to all the homeowners there that their area was in need of regeneration.

As to Hampden and the nearby Toryglen, perhaps it's escaped the notice of The Peeppul but Hampden stadium was completely refurbished and extended, with offices for the football authorities and a football museum. Just along the road is a huge Asda, open 24 hours a day. Efforts have been made before to regenerate Toryglen and new plans have already been drawn up to build new houses. There is also a sports centre attached to Holyrood School, which is open to the public outside school hours and the old pitches are currently being refurbished and another sports centre built next to it. So much for the Council ignoring Toryglen!

Another Bisto Kid greets on McMurdo's blog that Govan centre is a dump and that no money has been spent on either Govan or Ibrox. They've already forgotten the battles by GCC to keep shipbuilding going in Govan, while their friends in Westminster tried to dismantle it. Wine Alley has long gone, to be replaced with office space. It's not the fault of GCC if companies are too scared to take up residence there! As to Govan Cross and its surrounds, all the buildings have been cleaned up, there's a new shopping centre, new housing a brand-new subway station and the place looks better than it ever did. What the hell more do they want. ?

My abiding memory of working in Govan is of unrully children with parents making excuses galore. I gave one boy a row for fighting in the class. At 3 o'clock, when the children were leaving, he shouted at me, "Ya fuckin' bastard! Ya fuckin' bastard!" I asked his grandfather, who had come to collect him, if he was just going to stand there and let the boy speak to me like that. "Aye," he replied, "ye ur a fuckin' bastard!" The children ran riot in the school, completely outwith the control of anyone. Senior staff seemed afraid to discipline them and I heard that whenever they had in the past their cars were trashed. School resources were constantly abused; books ripped up, paint taken from cupboards and thrown about everywhere and furniture frequently broken. One lunchtime some of them decided to kick in the glass on the front door and the area surrounding it, just for the hell of it!

What really annoyed me was how much was given to these children and the money that was lavished on them, with no appreciation whatsoever. The Moscow State Circus came to Glasgow. They offered to put on a free show at a primary school; guess what school they were sent to! Just about every school in Scotland has a Book Week every year but I've only ever known one school where authors, singers and performance artists turned up. It was also the only primary school I've ever seen with showers in the gym. The school got everything going and not one word of gratitude or appreciation was forthcoming from the parents or their offspring; in fact, they seemed to think it was their God-given right! They were promised parties, discos and days out if they amassed enough 'Good Behaviour' points but, from past experience, they knew that they'd get them no matter what.

Eventually I'd had enough and refused point-blank to go back. Both the head teacher and the Council were understanding; I was by no means the first to walk out. It was not an environment in which you could do any teaching at all. I was surprised that some of my class had actually reached Level D, until I had a quick look at their test papers. Let's put it this way: I wouldn't have passed them! I later met other supply teachers that could not cope with working in this place; one only lasted ten minutes. A child spat in her face and the head teacher refused to do anything about it. I don't know if the school is still like that but it was a complete nightmare.

I worked in a good few schools in deprived areas; Easterhouse, Nitshill, Toryglen etc but I never encountered the misbehaviour that I witnessed in Govan. Nor did I encounter the sheer arrogance or sense of entitlement that I found in Govan. Maybe if they want the area to look better then  they should put more effort into how they raise their children!

The big story getting The Peeppul excited at the moment is about Nir Biton, who was apparently subjected to a torrent of abuse from Celtic fans on his Instagram account after posting a prayer to the Israeli army. He must be either remarkably naive or stupid or both to have done such a thing; surely he was aware that the Celtic support prides itself on standing up for the oppressed? Some are arguing that he is entitled to his own, private opinions, which is, of course, true. As soon as you put your opinions on a public forum, however, they are no longer private and you can't complain if people express anger about those opinions.

That being said, the online articles about the 'abuse' actually show no evidence of such abuse taking place. There are allegations that anti-Semitic terms were used but any quotes show anger and disappointment rather than abuse. As usual, it's all being blown out of proportion. Strangely, or perhaps not so, when Barcelona player Ibrahim Afellay expressed his support for the Palestinians of Gaza and was inundated with angry comments our media did not think it worth reporting. It seems to depend on whom you are supporting and who is doing the condemning before it's deemed newsworthy.

Of course, The Peeppul profess to be outraged, fired by the fundamentalist Protestant support for Israel as part of the plan to bring on the Last Days. So European and American Jews turn up and want 'their' country back from people that have been living there for centuries and the Peeppul think that's okay. I wonder if they'd be so understanding if a few million people of Irish descent turned up in Ulster and demanded that the 'indigenous Scots' fuck off out of the Irish ancestral home!

"Ahy pyoor wish Ah wis a Time Lord 'n 'at. Ah could fair go a bit-a regeneration masel' 'n 'at!"

NEWSFLASH!

Reports are coming in of a revolution at Bampots Utd. Scores of corduroy-clad peasants stormed Bampot Palace, brandishing pitchforks and copies of Farmer's Weekly. President Mick was seriously assaulted with a saithe as he sought refuge in his utility room.

It appears that not everyone was happy with the amount of edicts that President Mick issued each day. The peasants found it hard to keep up with, as well as having to hunt high and low for comments. One unemployed individual, who calls himself Carson, said, "Ma mammy coodny keep up wi' it when shay wis readin' it tae mae. Wan minute it wis aboot Celtic the next it wis aboot Gaza."

President Mick has made concessions and has promised to limit the amount of edicts he issues. His grateful subjects presented him with a new ice-cream bowl and a signed photo of Ellie Harrison.
